Many thanks to John Rawlins for sending in these photos
from his racing career, together with the attached bit of text.
John says he had seen his bus in the
background of various photos on this website, so he thought it was
time he got his car on it! He raced between approximately 1975 and
1982, before emigrating to Canada.
A fire when racing at Coventry, the photo being
taken by an alert spectator. THe fire was caused by a broken oil
pipe to the pressure gauge, emitting oil onto the hot exhaust pipe.
The reason for John's car being airborne < is that he was making
a beeline for the fire steward and bounced over the curb, shooting
the flames upwards. Once John had stopped the car and turned the
engine off, the fire went out. No damage, and he was racing at Brafield
the following day. Looks pretty spectacular though!
John, from Rugby, raced a 390 Oldsmobile engine
for much of the time, but found out too late, that it was pretty
underpowered. By renting a Frankie Wainman hire car for Skegness
and Brafield, he found out what he had been missing by not having
a 454 Chevy! John scored more points in those two meetings in 1981
than he had all year.
